The two men lived and worked together at their estate in New Rochelle, New York, in a relationship that was an open secret in the art world and carefully unacknowledged everywhere else. Leyendecker's late years were difficult — illustration styles changed, his income declined dramatically, and he died in relative obscurity in 1951, survived by Beach, who outlived him by only a few months. The rediscovery and celebration of his work in recent decades has been both long overdue and genuinely enthusiastic.
