About the artist
Paul Ranson (1861–1909) was one of the most inventive and decorative members of the Nabis — the group of Post-Impressionist painters who gathered around Gauguin's revolutionary ideas and pushed them in bold, distinctively decorative directions. Ranson's work has a flat, pattern-rich quality that draws on Japanese prints, Art Nouveau, and medieval tapestry in equal measure — richly coloured, boldly outlined, and full of a sinuous decorative energy that makes his compositions immediately striking.
