Katsushika Hokusai
Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) spent his entire long life in pursuit of artistic mastery — and produced some of the most recognisable images in the history of world art along the way. The Great Wave off Kanagawa alone has become one of the most reproduced artworks ever created. The Japanese ukiyo-e master's bold outlines, flat planes of colour, and extraordinary compositional skill made his work immediately appealing to Western audiences when it was first introduced to Europe in the 19th century, directly influencing the Impressionists.
