My Experience in stitching The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh

We love hearing from stitchers about their projects. Here, one of our customers, Jan, shares what it was like to stitch our Starry Night Cross Stitch Kit.

When I opened the kit and saw all the vibrant blues, yellows, and swirling patterns, I was excited but a little nervous. But once I threaded the needle and got started, it became really relaxing. There's something so satisfying about making those tiny 'x' stitches and watching the picture slowly come to life.

Some parts were definitely tricky, especially with all the color changes to capture van Gogh's swirling sky. I had to pay close attention to get the stars and hills just right. It was a bit challenging, but that made it even more rewarding when I finished each section. It felt like I was painting with thread, and seeing the iconic sky take shape was amazing.

The best part was putting in the final stitch and stepping back to see the whole design finished. I was so proud of how it turned out! Framing it and hanging it up made me feel like I brought a piece of van Gogh's art into my home. It wasn't just about having a new decoration; it was about all the time and effort I put into making something so beautiful.

Thinking of Stitching The Starry Night Yourself?

Thank you, Jan! If her story has inspired you, here are a few tips to help with a colourful, detailed design like this one:

  • Grid your fabric so you never lose your place among the swirls. See gridding your cross stitch fabric.
  • Try the parking method to handle the many colour changes in the sky. Our parking method guide explains how.
  • Sort your threads first and label them, since several blues are very close in shade.
  • Work in good light, especially in the darker areas of the hills and cypress tree.
  • Frame it with care when you're done. Follow how to frame your cross stitch.

Hi Ron, is the design purchased from The Art of Stitch or elsewhere? The one we design is pretty close to the original shade and I’m not so sure what MMA original means to advise.

Lauren

My wife has been working on Starry Night for over a year. She is almost finished the sky. I have worked with her in improving colouring based on the MMA original. The cypress tree is much greener and the colours are more vibrant than the pattern. Has anyone else gone to this extent on improving colours?
First post but not on social media.
Is there some forum.
