Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) was the most celebrated and controversial Orientalist painter of the 19th century — a French Academic master whose meticulously researched, technically dazzling depictions of Egypt, Turkey, the Holy Land, and North Africa made him one of the most famous artists in the world during his lifetime and one of the most debated since. He travelled extensively throughout the Middle East and North Africa, making multiple trips to Egypt, Turkey, and Palestine from the 1850s onwards, sketching and photographing obsessively and returning to his Paris studio with a wealth of visual material that he transformed into paintings of extraordinary technical refinement and almost photographic precision.
Gérôme was a painter of surfaces in the way that Liotard was a painter of surfaces — which is to say that his ability to render marble, bronze, flesh, fabric, sand, and water with equal and astonishing fidelity was the kind of technical achievement that makes other painters feel slightly inadequate just looking at it. His famous Pygmalion and Galatea — in which the sculptor Pygmalion kisses his marble statue as she comes to life, the transition from cold stone to warm flesh rendered in a single figure with breathtaking technical skill — is one of the great showpieces of Academic painting. His Pollice Verso — gladiators in the Roman arena, a victorious fighter awaiting the crowd's verdict over his fallen opponent — was so historically researched and so visually powerful that it single-handedly shaped the popular image of Roman gladiatorial combat for a century, including, by a rather long chain of influence, the film Gladiator.
He was also, in his later career, a sculptor of considerable accomplishment — he pioneered the technique of polychrome sculpture, combining different coloured marbles, onyx, and bronze to create figures of extraordinary material richness that extended his lifelong obsession with surface and texture into three dimensions. His students included Edwin Lord Weeks and John Singer Sargent, which tells you something about the quality of what he was teaching. He was elected to the Académie française, appointed professor at the École des Beaux-Arts, and was for decades the most powerful teacher in French academic art — a position he used with both generosity toward his students and considerable firmness toward anyone whose work he considered insufficiently rigorous.
