Martin Johnson Heade was the kind of artist who could make flowers and birds seem more glamorous than Hollywood’s finest. Born in 1819 in Pennsylvania, Heade started his career painting portraits, but at some point, he must have realized, “You know what’s better than people? Hummingbirds.” Thus began his love affair with nature—and the art world has been better for it.

Heade had an artist’s wanderlust, traveling to tropical locales like Brazil and Costa Rica to find inspiration. His canvases feature radiant flowers, lush foliage, and birds so lifelike they make you want to whistle at them.
