Eric Ravilious (1903–1942) captured England the way it exists in the national imagination — quiet, slightly melancholy, suffused with a particular quality of pale winter light that makes even the most ordinary scene feel charged with meaning. A gifted watercolourist, wood engraver and designer, he painted chalk downs, lighthouses and country interiors with a crisp, patterned clarity, and served as an official war artist until his death in 1942.
