Saving Money on Cross Stitch
You love cross stitch, but it's starting to get expensive. How can you maintain this hobby without falling into the commercial traps of the cross stitch craze? Here are our tried-and-true tips for stretching your cross stitch supplies and making the most of what you have.
Cross stitch is one of the most affordable crafts there is, but it's easy to let costs creep up with every new kit, gadget and organiser. The good news is that a few simple habits can stretch your supplies much further, leaving more to spend on the projects you really love.
Fabric: Save Every Scrap
After finishing a project, trim the excess fabric. You'll want to leave 2–3 inches around your design for framing (see how to frame your cross stitch), but anything beyond that can be saved for later. Leftover pieces are perfect for small motifs, bookmarks, coasters, patches for clothes and table runner trims. Your project doesn't have to end when the main piece is done.
Tip: Plan your fabric before you cut. Our guide to fabric count and floss strands helps you work out exactly how much a design needs, so you don't overbuy.
Thread: Use What You Have
Leftover floss is ideal for small designs. If a free pattern calls for red and you only have pink, use the pink! Your finished piece will still look lovely, and you'll save money by stitching from your stash. Store leftovers on bobbins labelled with their colour number, so they're easy to find. Our guide to selecting thread for cross stitching explains how to swap colours with confidence.
Needles: Keep the Spares
Always keep the needles that come with your kits. Even if each kit includes a new one, spares are handy for when one disappears into the sofa. A small pincushion or needle minder keeps them safe, so there's no need to buy extras. If you do need more, our guide to choosing the best needles helps you pick the right size.
Say Goodbye to Expensive Organisers
High-end cross stitch organisers are tempting, but everyday storage often works just as well, if not better:
- Cheap plastic drawers make excellent thread organisers.
- A simple box keeps fabric flat and clean.
- A zip-lock bag is perfect for your current project and its threads.
Being frugal doesn't mean you love cross stitch any less. It just means you're smart about where your money goes.
Choose Projects Wisely
- Kit or pattern? If you already have fabric and a good thread stash, a pattern on its own costs far less than a full kit. Explore our cross stitch patterns.
- Go small. Mini designs use less fabric and thread, finish quickly and make lovely gifts.
- Avoid costly mistakes. Restitching wastes thread. Read the top 10 common cross stitch mistakes before you start.
Embrace Creativity Over Cost
