Alfred William Strutt (1856–1924) painted the bond between children and animals with a tenderness and quiet sincerity that feels genuinely felt rather than merely decorative. The British artist's warm, carefully observed scenes of young lives and their animal companions — dogs, horses, birds, and farm animals treated with the same dignity and affection as their human counterparts — have a sweetness and emotional honesty that sets them apart from the sentimental animal painting of his era.
