Edwin Lord Weeks (1849–1903) was the American painter who went to the East and never quite came back — not in spirit, anyway. The Boston-born Orientalist artist spent much of his career travelling through Morocco, Persia, Egypt, and India, documenting the architecture, street life, and extraordinary visual richness of the Islamic world with a chromatic intensity and atmospheric depth that made him one of the most celebrated Orientalist painters of the 19th century.
