Moïse Kisling (1891–1953) was one of the most colourful figures of the École de Paris — a Polish-born painter who arrived in Montparnasse in 1910 and threw himself into the bohemian artistic life of pre-war Paris with the enthusiasm of someone who had found exactly the right world. His portraits, nudes and still lifes combine a distinctive graphic clarity with a rich, sensuous palette that is immediately recognisable — bold outlines, simplified forms and colours of extraordinary warmth.
