William Michael Harnett was best known for his trompe-l'oeil still lifes, but in Attention, Company! he painted a young boy in a paper hat, standing proudly to attention with a stick for a rifle against a weathered wall. It's a moving, characterful portrait and a striking piece of American art.

WHAT IS IN A PATTERN

Printable PDF chart (A4 or US Letter), a color cover page of the finished design, a DMC thread list with lengths needed, step-by-step stitching instructions, full color symbol chart and an instant download after checkout.

Works on phone, tablet, or computer — and fully compatible with Pattern Keeper for digital progress tracking.

HOW YOU RECEIVE IT

You get a download link on the order page and by email straight after checkout.

STANDARD VS LARGER

We give you two symbol size options so you can stitch the way you love.

Standard Symbols – A little bigger than the usual charts, these fit more of the pattern on each A4 page. Perfect if you like fewer pages and are comfy with regular-sized symbols.

Large Symbols – Around 30% bigger, making them super easy on the eyes. They do take up more pages, but many stitchers find them much more relaxing to follow.

Note: Bundled Sets may not include the option of Larger Symbols.

RETURNS

Unfortunately for digital downloads, we have a no-return policy. However if there is an issue with your chart, do let us know and we will replace the chart for you.

About the artist

William Michael Hartnett

William Michael Harnett (1848–1892) was the master of American trompe l'oeil — "fool the eye" — still life painting. Born in Ireland and raised in Philadelphia, he trained as an engraver before turning to painting, and became famous for compositions so convincing that viewers reached out to touch them: battered violins and sheet music, worn books, pipes, mugs and newspapers, each object rendered with astonishing texture and light.

Harnett's work was hugely popular with the public, but after his death it fell out of fashion until it was rediscovered in the 1930s. Today he is recognised as one of the great figures of American still life painting.
