The Ultimate Beginner's Guide to Cross Stitch

Whether you're opening your very first cross stitch kit or returning to a beloved hobby, this guide will help you get started with confidence. From choosing the right fabric to caring for your finished masterpiece, we've covered everything you need to know.

What You'll Need

Essentials

  • Cross stitch chart
  • Embroidery threads
  • Fabric (Aida or Evenweave)
  • Needle

Optional Tools

  • Embroidery hoop
  • Fabric glue
  • Needle minder
  • Magnifier or task lighting

Choosing Your Fabric

Fabric Counts

Cross stitch fabric is measured by count, which refers to the number of squares per inch.

11 Count Fabric

  • 11 squares per inch
  • Larger holes
  • Easier to see and stitch
  • Produces a larger finished design

14 Count Fabric

  • 14 squares per inch
  • Most popular choice for beginners
  • Good balance between ease and detail

18 Count Fabric

  • 18 squares per inch
  • Smaller holes
  • More detailed appearance
  • Produces a smaller finished design

How Fabric Count Affects Size

The lower the fabric count:

  • Larger holes
  • Easier stitching
  • Larger finished design

The higher the fabric count:

  • Smaller holes
  • More detailed results
  • Smaller finished design

Example: A design measuring 11" × 14" on 14-count Aida will stitch smaller on 18-count Aida, approximately 9" × 11".

Beginner Recommendation

If you're new to cross stitch, start with 14-count Aida. Once you're comfortable, you can move on to 18-count fabric for more detailed projects.

Choosing the Right Needle

Needle Sizes

Using the correct needle size helps protect your fabric and makes stitching more comfortable.

Size 20 Needle

Recommended for:

  • 6-count Aida

Size 22 Needle

Recommended for:

  • 8-count Aida

Size 24 Needle

Recommended for:

  • 11-count Aida
  • 22-count Evenweave
  • 25-count Evenweave
  • 27-count Evenweave

Size 26 Needle

Recommended for:

  • 14-count Aida
  • 28-count Evenweave

Size 28 Needle

Recommended for:

  • 16-count Aida
  • 18-count Aida
  • 32-count Evenweave
  • 36-count Evenweave

If you've purchased a kit, the correct needle is usually included.

Understanding Thread Strands

Recommended Thread Strands

Most embroidery floss contains six strands twisted together. For cross stitch, you'll separate the strands before stitching. See below image.

14 Count Fabric

Recommended: 2 strands

Benefits:

  • Excellent coverage
  • Smooth appearance
  • Easy stitching

18 Count Fabric

Recommended: 2 strands

Benefits:

  • Crisp detail
  • Good coverage without bulk
  • Neat finished stitches

Want More Coverage?

Some stitchers prefer using 3 strands for fuller coverage. Keep in mind that you'll need additional thread, as it uses significantly more floss.

Avoid Long Jumps

Try not to carry thread long distances across the back of your fabric.

Instead:

  1. Finish the current section.
  2. Secure the thread.
  3. Start again in the new area.

This keeps the back neater and prevents thread show-through.

Reading Our Charts

Ignore Shaded Lines

You may notice shaded rows or columns on some chart pages.

Do not stitch these lines.

They are included only as reference markers to help you align adjoining pages and find your place within the pattern.

How to Start Your Project

Recommended Approach

Many stitchers begin from the center of the chart, but we recommend a simpler method.

Recommended Approach

  1. Start on Page 1.'=
  2. Complete the entire page.
  3. Move to the next page.

Stitching Direction

For right-handed stitchers:

  • Work left to right
  • Move downward as you progress

For left-handed stitchers:

  • Reverse the direction if it feels more comfortable

Our charts include a page map to help you locate your position within the overall design.

Finding Your Starting Point

Our kits include extra fabric around the design area to allow for framing and finishing.

Typical Fabric Margin

  • Usually 3–4 inches of extra fabric
  • Larger designs may include more

Calculate Your Margin

Use this simple formula:

(Fabric Size − Design Size) ÷ 2

Example

Design size:

  • 11" × 14"

Fabric size:

  • 21" long

Calculation:

21 - 14 = 7 inches

7 ÷ 2 = 3.5 inches

This means you'll have approximately 3.5 inches of fabric margin on each side.

Measure from the corner of your fabric and mark your starting point before stitching. See below diagram.

How do I use the shiny Kreinik thread?

As a fun optional bonus, we include approximately 3-6 metres of shimmering Kreinik thread with your kit. The colour is carefully selected to complement one of the colours in your design.

Once you've completed the regular stitching, you can add the Kreinik thread over selected stitches to create beautiful sparkling effects. Use it to highlight details, add accents, outline elements, or bring extra dimension to your finished piece.

There are no strict rules, this is where your creativity can shine. Make it as subtle or as sparkly as you like!

Cross Stitch Care Tips

While Stitching

Taking proper care of your project helps keep it clean and beautiful.

  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Remove your fabric from the hoop when not stitching.
  • Use thread lengths of approximately 18 inches.
  • Store your project in a bag or basket when not in use.
  • Keep fabric away from dust, spills, and direct sunlight.

Washing Your Finished Piece

Only wash your embroidery if necessary.

Before Washing

  • Wash each project separately.
  • Never wash embroidered items with regular laundry.

Washing Steps

  1. Use lukewarm water.
  2. Add a mild detergent or dishwashing liquid.
  3. Avoid bleach, wool wash, and harsh cleaners.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Don't panic if the rinse water becomes slightly colored. Continue rinsing until the water runs clear.

Drying Instructions

Do:

  • Roll the piece between two clean towels.
  • Gently press out excess water.
  • Lay flat to dry.

Don't:

  • Wring the fabric.
  • Fold damp embroidery.
  • Leave it in a pile while wet.

Ironing Your Project

When fully dry:

  1. Place the embroidery face-down between two clean towels.
  2. Use a warm iron, not a hot one.
  3. Apply steam if necessary to remove wrinkles.

This helps protect the stitches while restoring a smooth finish.

Important Care Notes

Avoid:

  • Protective coating sprays
  • Chemical fabric treatments
  • Harsh cleaning products

Dry cleaning is generally not recommended because some cleaning chemicals may react with thread dyes.

Ready to Start Stitching?

Cross stitch is one of those rare hobbies that manages to be both creative and strangely meditative. Start with one stitch at a time, trust the process, and before long you'll have transformed a piece of fabric into something worth framing. Tiny Xs. Thousands of them. Civilization remains mysterious.
