Jean Bourdichon Cross Stitch Kits & Patterns (4)
Jean Bourdichon (c.1457–1521) was the court painter and illuminator to four successive French kings — Charles VIII, Louis XII, Anne of Brittany, and Francis I — which is either a remarkable testament to his talent and diplomatic skill or the most impressive record of surviving regime change in the history of French art, possibly both. The Tours-born artist was the finest manuscript illuminator of his generation, producing works of such extraordinary delicacy, jewelled colour, and devotional beauty that they stand among the greatest achievements of late medieval and early Renaissance art in France — and are breathtaking to look at even now, five centuries after they were made.
His masterwork, the Hours of Anne of Brittany — a book of hours commissioned by the Queen of France between 1503 and 1508 — is one of the most magnificent illuminated manuscripts ever created. Its pages are bordered with extraordinary botanical illustrations of over 300 plant species rendered with a precision and beauty that would not look out of place in a modern field guide, surrounding devotional miniatures of luminous colour and compositional grace that reflect Bourdichon's profound understanding of both the Italian Renaissance and the Flemish painting tradition. Anne of Brittany was, by all accounts, a demanding patron who knew exactly what she wanted and had the resources to insist on it. Bourdichon delivered something that exceeded even those expectations, which is no small achievement.
Beyond the Hours, Bourdichon painted portraits, devotional panels, and decorative works for the French court with the same meticulous care and technical brilliance that characterised everything he produced. He was a man who took every commission with absolute seriousness regardless of its scale, and the results show it — even his smaller works have the quality of something made by someone who understood that the difference between good and extraordinary is the attention you bring to every single detail. In counted cross stitch, Bourdichon's jewelled colour, extraordinary botanical detail, and luminous devotional beauty translate into designs of rare and exquisite refinement.
