Our 10 stitching resolutions for 2025
A new year is the perfect time to set some stitching goals. Not strict rules, just gentle intentions to help you enjoy your hobby even more. Here are our ten stitching resolutions, plus a few ideas to help you keep them. They're just as good for any year!
1. Start a Stitching Journal
Track your projects, progress and thoughts in a dedicated journal or app. Note the date you started, the threads you used and how long it took. It's lovely to look back on, and it helps you plan future projects.
2. Finish a Long-Standing WIP
We all have one: that project you've been putting off for months (or years!). Set aside regular time to finally finish it. Breaking it into small sections helps. See getting started on a big cross stitch project for motivation tips.
3. Try a New Technique
Expand your skills with something new. Within cross stitch, try French knots, beading, the Danish method or parking. Or branch out into blackwork, Hardanger or other needlecrafts. See 10 needlecraft hobbies still popular today.
4. Stitch a Little Every Day
Even 15 minutes a day adds up to steady progress, and gives you a daily moment of calm. Read why cross stitch is a de-stresser.
5. Create Seasonal Projects
Plan a project for each season: spring florals, summer seascapes, autumn Halloween designs and cosy winter scenes. Small seasonal pieces make great decorations too.
6. Organise Your Supplies
Tidy your stash, wind threads onto labelled bobbins and file your patterns. A well-organised space makes it easier to start stitching and sparks fresh inspiration. See setting up a calm corner with needlework supplies.
7. Gift a Handmade Piece
Stitch something meaningful for someone you love. It shares your passion and brightens their day. Get ideas from thoughtful gift ideas using cross stitch kits.
8. Join a Stitching Community
Take part in online groups, stitch-alongs or local meetups. Sharing progress keeps you motivated, and you'll pick up lots of tips along the way.
9. Experiment With New Fabrics or Threads
Try stitching on linen or evenweave, or play with metallic and variegated threads. Our guides to Aida vs evenweave and linen and selecting thread will help.
10. Tackle a Dream Project
Choose an ambitious design, like a large masterpiece or detailed fine art reproduction, and commit to making it real. Use gridding and a stitching plan to make it manageable, and enjoy every step.
