August Laux
August Laux (1847–1921) was a German-American painter with a flair for the whimsical. While many artists of his time focused on somber portraits or lofty landscapes, Laux chose joy as his muse. His paintings are filled with playful cherubs, jolly musicians, and lively scenes that feel like they’ve been lifted from a merry dream. Whether it was a bunch of grapes or a group of children at play, he had a knack for capturing life’s lighthearted moments with rich detail and a sense of humor.
After moving to the U.S., Laux became a part of New York’s art scene, exhibiting at the National Academy of Design and even contributing decorative works to churches and public buildings.
