Jacopo Bassano (c.1510–1592) was one of the most inventive and quietly revolutionary painters of the Italian Renaissance — a Venetian master who worked most of his career in the small town of Bassano del Grappa, far from the glamour and competition of Venice, and used that distance from the centre to develop a style of startling originality that influenced painters for generations after his death. The Bassano family was essentially a painting dynasty — Jacopo ran a prolific workshop with his sons Francesco, Giambattista, Leandro, and Gerolamo, all of whom were painters, which must have made the family business meetings either very productive or completely chaotic, possibly both simultaneously.
What makes Jacopo especially fascinating is the range and ambition of what he achieved from his provincial base. He was one of the first painters to elevate animals and everyday rural life to the status of serious subjects — his biblical scenes are populated with extraordinarily observed sheep, cattle, dogs, and farmyard animals painted with a naturalistic accuracy and affectionate attention that anticipates the great animal painters of later centuries by a hundred years. His treatment of artificial light — candles, torches, and firelight in nocturnal scenes — was ahead of its time and influenced the development of Caravaggism. And his late works, painted in his eighties when his eyesight was failing, have a loose, painterly freedom that looks almost Impressionist and has astonished art historians ever since.
He was also, by all accounts, deeply rooted in the community around him — his paintings reflect genuine knowledge of and affection for the agricultural life of the Veneto, the animals, the seasons, the labour, and the landscapes of a particular place painted by someone who actually lived there and looked at it carefully for eighty years.
