Edvard Munch (1863–1944) painted anxiety before anxiety was a diagnosis — and the world has been relating to his work ever since. The Norwegian Expressionist grew up shadowed by illness, loss, and a family history that would give any therapist pause: his mother died of tuberculosis when he was five, his sister Sophie died of the same disease at fifteen, and Munch himself was a sickly child who spent long stretches away from school convinced he wouldn't survive. He later wrote that illness, madness, and death were the angels that attended his childhood — which explains rather a lot about the paintings that followed.
The Scream — that agonised figure beneath a blood-red sky, hands pressed to cheeks, mouth open in a silent howl — was inspired by a real walk Munch took near Oslo in 1892, during which he experienced what sounds very much like a panic attack of spectacular proportions. He described feeling an infinite scream passing through nature. Most of us would have gone home and had a cup of tea. Munch painted it four times and created one of the most recognisable images in the history of human art.
But Munch was far more than one painting. His Frieze of Life series — exploring love, jealousy, longing, illness, and death across decades of work — produced a body of art of extraordinary psychological depth and chromatic boldness. He was also, despite everything, remarkably long-lived — he made it to 80, outliving most of the people he painted grieving over, and spent his final decades in relative peace at his estate outside Oslo, surrounded by his own work and a collection of animals he adored. He left his entire estate, including over 1,000 paintings, to the city of Oslo upon his death. The Munch Museum there holds the largest collection of his work in the world.
