Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901) immortalised the world of fin-de-siècle Paris with a graphic boldness and psychological insight that nobody before or since has quite matched. The Moulin Rouge, the cabarets, the dance halls, the performers and their audiences — Lautrec painted and printed them all in a flat, poster-influenced style, with an eye for character that made him the defining visual chronicler of Montmartre at its most electric.
